Bernice Peacock

In her own words:

The media I work with is colored pencil drawings, oil paint and woodcut prints. The imagery is taken from objects that I am associated with through personal experience or interest. The imagery is fragmented and isolated from the associated experience so that the viewer percieves the emotion or echo of the experience free from the speciffic narrative. The composition has a dream-like quality reminiscent of the Surrealist. Unlike the Surrealist, however, the imagery is not random or left to chance. In fact, I think of my artwork as a personal diary.

When all is said and done, artwork is an arrangement of forms, colors and lines. I am concerned with the overall effect of the work despite the disparate imagery. I believe that the emotion of the moment that inspired the particular image gives the artwork a vital and personal connection to its creator, which grounds it in the human experience. In the end, I hope to convey a universal message that is felt but cannot be fully explained.
